The College of William and Mary’s Center for Geospatial Analysis (http://www.wm.edu/cga) is seeking an Spatial Database Engineer for a newly created position that requires the creation and distribution of an original geographic and demographic database describing school attendance zones for school districts throughout the United States. The database is known as the School Attendance Boundary Information System (SABINS) funded by NSF grant # SES 0921794. The SDE engineer will work collaboratively with faculty and a GIS programmer (the job search for this position is in process) in this effort. The SDE engineer will take a leadership role in the design of a new database that will consist of digital geography delineating school attendance boundaries; this GIS data will be integrated with demographic data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Education and disturbed via the National Historic GIS (www.nhgis.org) housed at the Minnesota Population Center.
This is an operational position in an academic setting; the College of William and Mary is located in Williamsburg, VA. The position is 12 months with funding in hand for a second year option. The possibility of extension pending extended or new grant support beyond two years exists. The position comes with full benefits. Other Details: Experience using ESRI GIS software (ArcGIS Desktop, Server & ArcSDE) in combination with Microsoft SQL Server is necessary. Applicants must have a thorough understanding of the ESRI Enterprise Geodatabase model and the topological capabilities of the model. The position requires database design, database development, QA / QC, and SDE support and the candidate must be able to architect, develop, and manage databases created and/or deployed on-site. Database systems supported may include but not limited to Microsoft SQL Server with the ESRI Spatial Database Engine (SDE), and Microsoft Access. Required experience includes five years of on-the-job spatial database development experience. A Masters degree is required (although a Bachelors degree with lengthy experience in an SDE administration will be considered) and it is an advantage to have a degree in geography (GIS or Remote Sensing), mathematics, environmental science, computer science, IT/engineering or to have a social science degree that emphasizes quantitative approaches. GIS (ASPRS, GISCI) / Microsoft (MCSE, etc.) certifications are beneficial. Both the resume and the personal interview will be used to determine if the candidate satisfactorily meets these qualifications.
